A Millennial Story Is Born

Every character haunts the mind of its creator, and it's through words that we bring these characters together to tell us a story... their story. And so, I now share with you how Dr. Parker, Alicia, George, Mary, and Chris came to be.

In 2012 was when the idea came up to write my first comedy in a film script titled "Amor Amor", which story takes place in the CDMX, with three main characters at that time (Maya, Jorge and Alicia), and of course it was when I thought of including a narrator, and I thought I wanted something like the character of Carrie Bradshaw (played masterfully in the series Sex and the City, by Sarah Jessica Parker), that's how it was born to adapt my script to a novel, to Dr. Dorothy Parker, based on the eponymous name of the New York writer of the mid-twentieth century, recognized in his work for his witty and biting comments. I also adapted the story and its characters, now set in New York.

As a good movie lover, my ideas began to project themselves as stills in my head, scenes that I was transcribing in letters in front of my computer, so for that to happen I had to give an image to my protagonists, which I thought of initial actors such as Darren Criss as George, Jessica Alba as Mary, and Rebel Wilson as Alicia. And later Chris Evans as Chris; when I made some changes to the story.

The first character was George without a doubt, as I identified myself in many aspects in his story, based on my own experiences, and part of my character and ideas reflected in him. A boy who accepts his identity, but not as his priority, but as part of him, and prioritizing his dreams and passions. So afterwards, I idealized the image of Tom Holland in the character.

Then came Alicia, one of the characters I most enjoyed creating and writing, since I wanted from the beginning to give the space and leading role to a girl with not only physical qualities different from the standard beauty, but to show that a girl like Alicia can be equal or better than another cover girl. Also, about her perception of freedom and self-acceptance of emotions and ideals, it was that plus that made her charisma, to write a fun, fresh, daring and by far, self-confident character. Alicia is that girl who isn’t afraid to undress only her body, but also her own desires, who knew what she wanted and didn’t want in her life.

About Mary, I must admit that she may seem like the typical cover character, the classic young, beautiful, charismatic girl and all those qualities that can perfect the character, however, I wanted to create her from the beginning, as a migrant girl, who started from the bottom and could demonstrate a story of overcoming, but at the same time, also face circumstances that made her fearful and distrustful about the issues of love, couple. Undoubtedly an admirable but also fragile girl, who above all, has the courage to take risks in the changing world of millennials.

Including a transgender man, Chris Johnson, seemed to me a relevant idea, since I wanted to reflect the story from a more human perspective and from his beginnings in that path of identity and his transformation, and not be the classic trans man who wanders the streets, cabaret or a cartoon as it used to be represented in a retrograde culture. It was when I remembered that I had read an article on the internet, about the story of a transgender man named Jaimie Wilson, which addressed with great courage his transformation process, both physically and emotionally, and that's how I decided to make my own adaptation, since I not only found it very interesting, but also very important to make known part of that story, or at least something similar.

Once my characters were created, I decided to include more elements that would give that spicy, sarcastic and funny flavor to the story through its four main characters and their special narrator, Dr. Parker.

Undoubtedly, the inspiration of the famous TV series Sex and the City, was for me a great influence to write #Millennials in New York, and above all also a great challenge to create new characters in this generation of millennials.
